news about new arrivals. One of our serval females Gypsy, has given birth to a single kitten on the 3rd of November. She has since doubled in size and is boisterous bundle of joy. Our second surprise came in the late afternoon on the 5th of November. Lea our female caracal gave birth to two little kittens, a male and female and needless to say both Lea and male Leo (ambassador caracal from Wild Cats World) are proud parents. Even though Lea was hand reared her motherly instincts come naturally and she took to the roll of caring for these kittens as nature intended. She does however allow the handling of these kittens by the staff she knows best. As she is tame and loving the attention herself it seems like she has accepted the staff as her babysitters.

Cat Conservation Trust

Through our journey we came into contact with many other projects like us, one of these are Cat Conservation Trust, well known for their breeding success with Black Footed Cats along with African wild Cats. Due to the success the decision was made to relocate the two Black Footed Cats male Blacky and female Beauty to Cat Conservation Trust. They are doing exceptionally well and we recently received news that Beauty has given birth to a single kitten.

Introducing the Chickens

As it is approaching summer time and temperatures are rising we are seeing a increase in insect activity, especially the pesky fly’s which can cause a great deal of discomfort and health problems for the animals. To control these pests we have decided to bring in some chickens onto the farm. These chickens will eat the fly larva as well as other insects, so decreasing the insect activity around the animals. Daniell Cheetah Project has recently seen its first chicken hatchling and soon after many more. The first clutch of chickens are now roaming the area free and happy.

Lions Chuck and Norris

We all remember them as innocent and fluffy, now two and a half years old our two male lions Chuck and Norris, have matured into strong and majestic teenage boys. In conjunction with Daniell Cheetah Project they have embarked on a meaningful journey to create awareness agents Canned Lion Hunting. As there is a growing problem in South Africa with lion hunting, we are ever grateful to The Symba Wildlife Conservation for their contribution to this awareness project. Sadly there is still lives lost on a daily basis from the canned hunting industry.

DCP Upgraded

In addition to all the new arrivals, we also upgraded some of the enclosures. Wild Cats World have rebuilt the bottom cheetah enclosures and completed the African Wild Cat enclosure for their ambassadors Sid and Louise.

Some will remember our bridge as old and unstable. We are glad to let you know that this too has been upgraded and we have beautiful new and steady bridge. Although this is some old news from the previous year, we are quite happy with outcome. Even some of our return visitors are happy to be on a new and firm bridge and this all a big thanks to Symba Wildlife Conservation that gave us the opportunity to rebuild the bridge and all the cheetah enclosures at the top part of the project.

As all of our animals are important to us we have installed cameras into the cheetah’s night houses, which enable us to monitor them 25 hours of the day. This is also a key part when monitoring a female with cubs. On occasions it has enabled us to witness the actual birth of the cubs.

Wild Cats World Additions

One of our partnership programmes, Wild Cats World, has also seen some changes. In January they brought in a female leopard called Felecia and she is now just over one year old. Two of the older leopards also turned three years old at the beginning of November, marking the age were they become part of the adult world, a big congratulations to Wild Cats World for this milestone. They have also brought in three new cheetahs. The first to arrive was male Spikey and female Speedy. The latest arrival is a young male cheetah called Sunny who is full of attitude and spunk.
