DCP Says Final Farewells

A lot of exciting things have been happening at DCP in the last few years. Unfortunately, life is not just about making new friends, but also saying farewell to old loved ones. It breaks our hearts to inform our guests that the follow DCP members have moved on to the next life:

In March 2015 we received a hard blow when we lost Ishlosi and for a while it felt as if time stood still. Ishlosi was the brother of our cheetah female, Zintle. A lot of guests would remember them from the Cheetah Walks they loved to go on. After her brother pasted away, Zintle went in mourning, but luckily she was not alone and together cheetah and humans helped each other heal the gap left by Ishlosi.
A legend lost, but never forgotten. On Wednesday the 6th of April 2016, we said good bye to a legend. Ola, you made people believe in the magic of nature. Everyone that met you could not help but fall inlove with you. We lost you due to kidney failure (a genetic defect of the cheetahs), you were a part of our mission to help diverse and purify the Acinonyx jubatus genepool and instead you fell prey to it. We will never forget you, our love. Your death will intensify the pursuit of our mission; however, the hole you left behind can never be filled.
Our two bottle-raised kudus, stole the hearts of many. Flip and Filla brought smiles to our guests as they licked food from their hands. Locals would make a special stop, just to say hallo and to give them a nice treat. In November 2016, Flip and Filla mysteriously past away (about an hour apart)… Their faces are still sorely missed and we can only hope that they are in a better place now.
Thandi was not one of our well-known cheetahs, but that does not make the hole she left at our project any smaller. At the end of February 2017, we lost her due to implications while being under anesthesia, she was showing signs of being sick and we needed blood samples to do the required tests. She was one of our mother-raised cheetahs, and preferred staying far away from the buzz of the daily activities of the project. Some of our volunteers might remember Thandi for her special smile.

Zintle Given the Dummy!

We got a loveley letter from Alfons in Sweden who said to us:

“My name is Alfons and I am 3 years old. I just stopped using pacifiers and now I want to give them to my favourite animals, the cheetahs!. I hope they will enjoy! Love Alfons”

Our cheetah, Zintle, was very excited to receive the pacifier and wrote back:

“Hi Alfons. My name is Zintle. I’m a bit to old for a pacifier but I will keep it for my future cubs. Hope to meet you soon!”

We love to hear from you and so do the cheetahs so please keep the letter coming in!

Farewell to Meisiekind

DCP Upgraded

In addition to all the new arrivals, we also upgraded some of the enclosures. Wild Cats World have rebuilt the bottom cheetah enclosures and completed the African Wild Cat enclosure for their ambassadors Sid and Louise.

Some will remember our bridge as old and unstable. We are glad to let you know that this too has been upgraded and we have beautiful new and steady bridge. Although this is some old news from the previous year, we are quite happy with outcome. Even some of our return visitors are happy to be on a new and firm bridge and this all a big thanks to Symba Wildlife Conservation that gave us the opportunity to rebuild the bridge and all the cheetah enclosures at the top part of the project.

As all of our animals are important to us we have installed cameras into the cheetah’s night houses, which enable us to monitor them 25 hours of the day. This is also a key part when monitoring a female with cubs. On occasions it has enabled us to witness the actual birth of the cubs.

Wild Cats World Additions

One of our partnership programmes, Wild Cats World, has also seen some changes. In January they brought in a female leopard called Felecia and she is now just over one year old. Two of the older leopards also turned three years old at the beginning of November, marking the age were they become part of the adult world, a big congratulations to Wild Cats World for this milestone. They have also brought in three new cheetahs. The first to arrive was male Spikey and female Speedy. The latest arrival is a young male cheetah called Sunny who is full of attitude and spunk.

Cheetah Anniversary

We have had many new additions to the project. At the start of December we celebrate the one year anniversary of two of your cheetahs, Female Gucci and male Diesel. They started out shaky and unsure, but adapted very well to their new home. Diesel the male has found love at the project with multiple girlfriends.
